Derby is a teddy bear of a dog and a prime candidate for a Sweetheart Award! He is a seven year old purebred yellow lab, replete with an angelic white face, golden body and an utterly lovable disposition. He enjoys the company of canines and human companions alike ~ an ardent admirer of people, he takes a keen interest in their activities, even the most mundane of tasks fascinate him! Derby seems to take comfort in the routine of his companions and is happy to just 'be', most notably, he can be found chilling at their feet or just within arms reach, snuggled into the round of his bed. Taken at face value, none of this would be seen as extraordinary, labs are unilaterally known for their good nature, resiliency and thus, universal appeal . However, given the circumstances surrounding Derby's rescue, its not only a testament to labs in general but Derby in particular for what this gentle lab has endured and the obstacles he's overcome.
You see, Derby was discovered late one night, doubled over in a ditch, believed to be unconscious, barely breathing and feared hit by a car. He was immediately taken to the emergency room, where a battery of tests were run and his condition stabilized. After a night of evaluation, it was determined Derby was in general good health and his condition was a circumstance of severe dehydration and multiple fire ant bites. Either prior to or after his collapse, Derby had landed in a mound where he was either too weak or too dehydrated to move, enduring bite after bite. Unrelenting in their attack on him, Derby sustained numerous welts as a result, his poor body was covered. Not a day later, he was sadly surrendered to animal control as no one came forward to claim him. We were alerted and agonized over his situation, so as soon as his stray hold was up, we rallied and got him released, and while we wish it could have been sooner, we will never forget the smile that greeted us upon his release.
Fast forward a few short weeks, Derby's emerged from a place of deep desperation, a dark and lonely ditch and into the arms of his loving rescuers. Beaming up at us now, is a vital, jovial and happy boy ~ ripe for love, eager for a family of his own and a second chance at happily ever after.
